冬の道東・鉄道の旅　Railways travel of Eastern Hokkaido in winter

The climate of winter in Hokkaido is so harsh but it is also an attractive travel destination.

I went to Abashiri and Kushiro of Eastern Hokkaido in March 2017. Spring starts in Tokyo, but it is still very cold in Hokkaido at that time.

In Abashiri, I fished smelts on a frozen lake. I carried them in the train to a guesthouse. The owner was a kind person and fried them, and I enjoyed them in the dinner.

Next day, thanks to the guide of the owner, I saw natural cranes in snow field. I traveled along Nemuro line, and a local diesel train ran along cold marsh.

冬の北海道の気候は厳しいですが、旅してみると意外な魅力があると思います。

2017年3月、道東の網走や釧路に行きました。3月は東京などでは春がやってきますが、北海道はまだ冬の最中です。釧網本線、根室本線のローカル列車に乗ったのに加え、氷上でのワカサギ釣りをしたり、タンチョウを見ることもできました。

大井川鉄道　Oigawa Railways

Last autumn, I attended the trip of the Japanese Railways Society, and traveled Oigawa Railways with the members.

We took a steam locomotive train, and a small and red narrow-gauge train of 762 mm with a rack rail section in the deep mountain.

昨年の秋、日本鉄道友の会（The Japanese Railways Society）の行事に参加し、大井川鉄道などに乗りに行きました。イギリス、ドイツ、オーストラリアなど外国と、日本の両方の鉄道ファンによる同好会です。

新金谷から千頭までは、SLと茶色い旧型客車の急行列車「かわね路」の旅で、その先はアプト式区間のあるナローゲージ（762㎜軌間）の井川線の小さな赤い列車に乗り換え、険しい山の中にある接阻峡温泉の駅で折り返してきました。

子どもとの鉄道議論　Enjoying discussion with my son

子どもが大きくなると、難しいことを聞かれることもありますね。

「なんで国鉄って、今はなくなったの？」
「お金が儲からなかったからじゃないかな」
「混んでいる山手線とかは？」
「でも、たとえばローカル線は人があまり乗らないよ。また今よりも、昔は自動車を持つ人も少なく、飛行機も不便だったからね」
「でも、国鉄の車両はまだ残っているんだね。185系、キハ40系とか」

結局は車両のことが、気になるのでしょうか？父の趣味である国鉄型車両での小さな旅に、付き合ってもらったときの会話でした。

My son has grown up and he often ask me difficult questions.

'Why was Japan National Railways (JNR) disappeared and privatised?' I told him about the financial difficulty of JNR. 　But he responded that Yamanote line or Shinkansen carry many people and look profitable, so I explained about the deficit in the lines of rural areas. 　Besides, I pointed out the inefficiency of public organisation and effect of motorization and airlines.　

It is stimulative to have such discussion with my son.

ケーブルカー　Cable railways and hiking in mountains

日本にはケーブルカーがたくさんあり、これらのおかげで子どもやお年寄りを含め、ハイキングなどを気軽に楽しむことができます。

There are many cable railways in Japan to climb up mountains, because the topography of this country has many ups and downs. For example, the mountains in Kanto area have cable railways, such as Mount Takao, Hakone, Mount Tsukuba.

In these mountains which are not far from the city, natures are beautiful, and we can refresh from the busy life in city. They have also cultures for many years. Temples as well as shrines on the steep mountains which has been worshipped since the old era are also worth visiting. Today, thanks to cable railways, people including elderly and kids can travel to them.

This is a Tofu and mushroom cuisine in Oyama, Kanagawa. Oyama for example has a long tradition that many people traveled from the capital to here before the opening of railways and we can experience the culture by such foods.

都営地下鉄の新型6500系と東急新横浜線　Series 6500 of Toei and Shin Yokohama line

東急・相鉄の新横浜線が、来年３月に開業することが発表されました。

写真は都営地下鉄の新型6500系で、新横浜や相鉄方面への直通列車でも活躍するのでしょう。

It is announced that Tokyu and Sotetsu Shin Yokohama line is open in March 2023.

The photo is Series 6500 of Toei which will run to these suburbs.

ちなみに、フランスの鉄道ファンの友人 Erobos さんによると、パリにもたまたま？似たような色と形の電車があるそうです。RER C線という、私も以前に利用していた路線です。

According to my railfan friend Erobos, a suburban train (RER) of similar color happens to run in Île-de-France!
